Arabian Automobiles, the exclusive dealer of Infiniti in Dubai and the Northern Emirates has announced that it has started taking bookings for the world’s most exclusive crossover, the Infiniti FX Vettel Edition. Just 50 units of the world’s most exclusive crossover, designed by Infiniti’s brand ambassador and reigning Formula One Drivers’ World Champion, Sebastian Vettel, will be made available across the region.
Featuring a 420bhp V8-engine, dry carbon-fibre aerodynamic package, unique 21” BBS alloy wheels and a bespoke interior to Vettel’s own specification, competition to be one of the select few owners of the one-of-a-kind FX Vettel Edition is going to be tough. In a unique offering which is the first of its kind for the brand, the dealer has hand-picked Infiniti sales executive Musaab Ibrahim Al Jailani as the Arabian Automobiles Infiniti FX Vettel Edition Sales Ambassador. His role would involve taking potential customers through an exclusive purchase experience which classifies the car as Infiniti’s most elite model.
Michel Ayat, CEO of Arabian Automobiles said: “The FX Vettel Edition’s appeal extends beyond its direct connection with reigning Formula One champion and Infiniti brand ambassador Sebastian Vettel. Its use of the finest materials available to the automotive industry, stunning looks, performance and exclusivity makes it a highly desirable model. We are excited to be a retailer of this exclusive model and are honoured to play our part in the presence of this special edition in the region.”
Musaab Ibrahim Al Jailani, the Arabian Automobiles Infiniti FX Vettel Edition Sales Ambassador added: “The specialist role that I have been assigned by Arabian Automobiles for this exclusive project is a huge privilege. The Infiniti FX Vettel Edition is a unique model with limited units on sale, and we have started receiving enquiries from many interested customers who would like to own one of the 50 units in the GCC. I look forward to extending our welcome to the FX Vettel Edition customers.”
The FX Vettel Edition will not only be one of 2013’s most exclusive new performance cars but also one of the most focused, with the production cars being virtually identical to the concept version. Featuring an aerodynamics package developed in collaboration with Red Bull Racing, the FX Vettel Edition can claim both sleeker aerodynamics (drag is reduced by 5%) and, thanks to the rear spoiler, an additional 30% downforce. Other numbers confirmed by Infiniti include an upgrade of the 5.0-litre V8 to 420HP with torque of 53 kg-m (520 Nm), making it the most powerful Infiniti ever sold in the Middle East. It will sound as good as it goes thanks to a special exhaust system.
Carbon-fibre parts enhance the package further, while the increased downforce and lowered, stiffer suspension ensure handling and stability are exactly what the World Champion ordered.

3 complimentary oil changes
All Certified Pre-Owned Infiniti vehicles will receive three complimentary oil and filter change coupons, which can be redeemed at an authorised service centre for the next three services as specified on the coupons.

Employees of AW Rostamani Group and subsidiary unit Arabian Automobiles Company (AAC) got together last Sunday to celebrate Earth Day 2012 with a sponsored tree planting ceremony at AAC’s new mega showroom project which is currently under construction on the Emirates Road in Sharjah.
Speaking at the event, AW Rostamani Automotive division CEO Michel Ayat commented “As a major automotive distributor in the region both ourselves and Nissan Motor Company take our environmental responsibilities extremely seriously. As evidence of this Arabian Automobiles recently became the first automotive company in the UAE to be awarded ISO 14001 certification by Lloyd’s (LRQA) and we achieved this certification in only a year.”
The event not only marked Earth Day, but also pledged the entire team of 2500 employees across all 36 facilities of AWR Automotive in the UAE towards a commitment to act as responsible environmental citizens and to make a conscious effort to conserve water and electricity in both the work place and during personal time.
At the event, employees had the opportunity to personally sponsor the planting of a Damas tree at a cost of AED150 per employee, with the activity raising AED10,000 towards a charitable donation.
Mr. Neeraj Mahajan – Director Business Excellence & New Business at AWR detailed the enhanced commitment at AWR Automotive towards CSR and environmental activities and noted a major milestone in AAC’s efforts to support a greener environment in the UAE was its 2009 Dubai Award for Sustainable Transport (DAST) from the Road and Transport Authority (RTA). AAC was recognised in the environmental category for the use of the environmentally-friendly water-based paint mixing system at the company’s body and paint repair facilities in Dubai and Northern Emirates. Through the use of this water-based refinishing material, AAC has complied with the European EPA (Environmental Protection Act) laws relating to the release of harmful solvents into the atmosphere from the year 2007 onwards.
Mr. Mahajan also detailed the organisation’s on-going environmental initiatives noting the latest move to segregate various types of waste by using a comprehensive waste management system across the organisation. In the past 18 months, AWR employees have also donated blood through multiple blood donation drives as a CSR initiative. He emphasised that the success of these events is because of their cross-functional nature which ensures AWR’s diverse employee base feels able to contribute and make a positive impact all round.
Nissan Motor Company operates its own corporate environmental policy ‘Nissan Green Program 2016’. The program seeks to find a symbiosis of people, vehicles and nature, promoting and widening the development and application of green technologies and contributing to a sustainable mobility society.

Fashion students at Heriot-Watt University brought their collections to life, as the models took to the stage at Arabian Automobiles’ new Sheikh Zayed Road Infiniti Centre on Friday, 20th April 2012. The event attracted more than 250 guests including VIPs and socialites as well as many prospective new students.
The aim of the show was to promote collections designed by year 1, 2 and 3 fashion students – some of whom will be graduating this year and to give them a debut to the professional field of fashion. The show was hosted in collaboration with brands such as Splash, Iconic, Sisters Beauty Lounge, Nadine Make-Up, Mawaheb, Cartoon Network Arabic and Fragrance Foundation Arabia, all showing their support to these up and coming designers. Japanese premium automotive brand Infiniti provided the luxury setting in the boutique hotel-like ambience of its new Sheikh Zayed Road Centre. The Infiniti brand already staged a professional fashion show from international designers Akl Fakih and prominent female Emarati designer Fatima Al Kaabi in March this year.
With 50 models taking to the stage in a variety of the students’ innovative collections, including made-to-measure menswear, mythical goddess inspired draped evening wear, tailored jackets and 3D outfits inspired by architecture, the collections and individual pieces featured statement fashion pieces in vibrant colours and a range of on-trend fabrics including jersey, silk and twills with creative textile manipulations.
Vanessa Northway, the Academic Head of the School of Textiles & Design said: “The event was a great opportunity for our students to bring all their hard work to life and showcase their talent. We are delighted and appreciate all our supporters and wish the graduating students the very best of luck. We are confident that they will achieve success and gain immense returns for their hard work.”
Mohammed Akel, Infiniti Marketing Manager at Arabian Automobiles said: “Infiniti’s desirable model range blends performance with stand-out looks - an appealing combination for those with a heightened sense of style. Arabian Automobiles’ collaboration with fashion designers and upcoming talent at Infiniti Fashion events have underlined this direct link and offered audiences a chance to experience Infiniti’s unique retail environment. We are pleased to have been able to support Heriot Watt University’s fashion students with the use of our stylish Infiniti Centre on Sheikh Zayed Road and wish them the very best in their future endeavours.”

Infiniti, the luxury performance automotive brand from Japan, confirmed today at the 82nd Geneva Motor Show the limited production of 200 units of the 420 HP FX Sebastian Vettel version for European and Middle East markets.
Infiniti also revealed its first ever mid-engined sports car concept called the INFINITI EMERG-E.
INFINITI POWERS UP THE FX SEBASTIAN VETTEL VERSION
Infiniti today confirmed the FX Sebastian Vettel version, shown at the 2011 Dubai International Motor Show, is to enter a strictly limited production run of 200 units to be sold across Europe and Middle East regions. The announcement was made by Bernard Loire, Infiniti Vice President for Europe and the Middle East.
The production version will match the 420 HP output of the concept car making it the most powerful Infiniti yet to be sold by the Middle East business unit.
The car is a collaboration between Red Bull Racing’s champion racing driver and global brand ambassador, Sebastian Vettel, and Infiniti’s Chief Creative Officer, Shiro Nakamura. With its sophisticated technology, lightweight components and features such as Rear Active Steering for maximum agility, the V8 FX50S Premium – Infiniti’s current flagship as well as its best-selling model in some markets – provides the ideal starting point for the FX Sebastian Vettel version. Changes including increased power, lower weight, longer gearing, increased downforce and lowered, stiffer suspension turn what is already a sports car among crossovers into a crossover supercar.
INFINITI EMERG-E: AN ELECTRIFYING NEW TAKE ON THE SPORTS CAR
The INFINITI EMERG-E Concept, which makes its debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2012, is a highly advanced mid-ship sports car that provides an exciting glimpse into Infiniti’s future.
INFINITI EMERG-E is physical proof of Infiniti’s intension to produce a bold halo model befitting the brand’s promise of Inspired Performance, and also signals an array of exciting new technologies that the brand will adopt in its quest to build dramatic and sustainable high performance cars.
INFINITI EMERG-E is also significant for being the first Infiniti that has been developed in Europe. The 402 HP (300kW) mid-engined, twin motor, electric motors powered INFINITI EMERG-E is capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in just four seconds - and from zero to 130mph in a single, seamless 30 second burst. Yet it also operates as exciting, zero emission urban transport over a 30-mile range. And when the range-extender petrol engine functions in concert with its twin electric motors, it produces a CO2 output of only 55g/km (NEDC cycle).
Wrapped within highly aerodynamic, light bodywork characterised by design fluency, EMERG-E could only come from Infiniti.

Leading the region was Azerbaijan, which posted an extremely large 2011 sales growth of 131.67% over 2010, followed by Bahrain at 81.06%, Kuwait at 76.48%, and Oman at 29.43%. Dubai and the Northern Emirates posted positive growth of 19.35%, while Lebanon showed growth of 15.38%.

Infiniti, the luxury automotive brand from Japan, has begun sales of its enhanced for 2012 Infiniti FX to the Middle East region. Already a popular model across the region, upgrades to the 2012 model refresh the crossover’s appeal with new design cues and technology to compliment its performance-inspired driving dynamics.
Juergen Schmitz, General Manager, Infiniti in the Middle East, commented: “Infiniti FX has been a key model for us since its introduction and played a significant part in building the popularity of the brand in the Middle East. The region is a very important market for us and the arrival of 2012 Infiniti FX underlines our commitment to delivering the full Infiniti model range and our unique total ownership experience to its car-buying public. We’re sure the enhancements made will continue Infiniti FX’s proud record in the Middle East.”
Those enhancements centre on styling cues. The new front grille gives the already assertive looks of the previous model a more overtly aggressive appearance, complemented by the standard fitment of chrome front fog lamp finishers across the range. Newly designed 20” alloy wheels are standard across the FX35 range and 21” alloy wheels standard on the FX50. The exterior upgrades can be enjoyed with a vibrant palette of colours including Iridium Blue, introduced for the first time, and Graphite Shadow. Meanwhile the FX’s interior now boasts Infiniti’s characteristic white needles and white illumination of the trip computer in its instrument panel.
One of the most aggressive expressions of sport and utility prowling the streets today, the 2012 Infiniti FX is available with a choice of a 390bhp 5.0-litre 32-valve DOHC V8 engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) or a 303-horsepower 3.5-litre 24-valve DOHC V6 engine.
The 2012 Infiniti FX is also offered with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, double-wishbone front/multi-link rear suspension and large 4-wheel disc brakes, complimented by Continuous Damping Control (CDC®) and Rear Active Steer as standard on FX50.
Inside, the FX interior provides a warm, inviting environment, highlighted by a driver-oriented cockpit with intuitive controls, available sport seating and advanced audio, navigation (including Arabic language support and direction of Mecca feature) and technology – ranging from a Bose 11-speaker Premium Sound system to the Infiniti Intelligent Key, Intelligent Cruise Control (Full-Speed Range) and Around View® Monitor system.

The Infiniti JX is set to shake up the status quo when the innovative seven-passenger luxury crossover joins the Infiniti Middle East lineup in summer 2012. The all-new Infiniti JX is designed to excel in the areas that luxury crossover buyers desire most – interior flexibility and roominess, safety and advanced hospitality features. The JX offers real three-row utility, plus all the premium features, performance and innovations that Infiniti has become known for worldwide.
“The all-new Infiniti JX encapsulates the DNA of all Infiniti’s Inspired Performance models to deliver distinctive looks and rewarding driving dynamics in a practical full seven-seat luxury crossover,” said Infiniti Middle East’s General Manager, Juergen Schmitz. “Infiniti JX looks beyond the ordinary by adding innovation, the latest automotive technology, design flair and appealing driving dynamics reminiscent of performance sedans to the essential demands of practicality, comfort and safety. Infiniti JX stands in a class of its own both in terms of segment and range of features.”
GCC region prices and full details of final specifications will be revealed closer to the launch in summer 2012, however, highlights of the 2013 Infiniti JX include:
• Emotive styling and craftsmanship, featuring the new Infiniti design language direction initiated with the Essence concept
• Segment-leading overall passenger volume
• Segment-leading rear cargo volume (3rd row seats folded, 2nd row seats in forward-most slide position)
• Access to 3rd row without removing a 2nd row child seat
• Around View™ Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection
• Extensive safety and security technologies, including available world’s first Backup Collision Intervention (BCI) system
• Available Bose® Cabin Surround® 15-speaker sound system with digital 5.1-channel decoding and a new Acoustic Waveguide subwoofer
A Bold New Expression of Seven-Passenger Luxury
The demarcation line between the Infiniti JX and other three-row luxury crossovers starts with the idea that seven-passenger seating should actually and easily welcome all seven passengers. Utilization of a flat platform floor not only enhances 3rd row roominess and provides a long 2nd row total adjustment of 14cm fore and aft for versatile roominess and cargo carrying capacity, it also allows use of a more dramatic styling approach.
The World’s Only Backup Collision Intervention
The Infiniti JX continues Infiniti’s tradition of developing world’s first technologies, adding a new feature, Backup Collision Intervention (BCI), to the currently available Blind Spot Intervention™ (BSI) system. With this technology, when the transmission is in reverse, the JX will help the driver detect crossing vehicles and objects behind the JX and, if necessary, the system can automatically engage the brakes to help avoid a collision.
Unsurpassed Luxury and 2nd Row Flexibility
Beyond its stunning exterior, the new JX clearly sets a new standard for both space and hospitality. JX’s unique flexibility starts with nearly six inches of 2nd row seat travel – allowing legroom and cargo space to be conveniently adjusted between the 2nd and 3rd rows as needed. The 3rd row isn’t the typical penalty box either, with ample head- and knee-room for adults or children.
A Powerful and Efficient Drivetrain
At launch, Infiniti JX utilises a 3.5-litre DOHC V6 petrol engine mated to a sport-tuned Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) to provide high responsiveness and seamless, efficient shifting feel – the first Infiniti to utilize a fuel-efficient CVT. The transmission can mimic a step transmission when the Sport mode of the Infiniti drive selector is engaged. The CVT design also features a wide gear ratio and low friction design.
“JX is a vehicle of many talents and by optimizing every facet, Infiniti has taken the luxury segment to new highs. Combining design flair, rewarding driving dynamics and high levels of technology, both mechanically and in features, are the hallmarks of Infiniti’s Inspired Performance signature, which have been embedded into the DNA of this stand-out true seven-seat luxury vehicle. We look forward to introducing the Middle East to this all-new class of vehicle next summer,” concluded Schmitz.

Infiniti, the luxury automotive brand from Japan, has celebrated being open for business in its tenth Middle Eastern country with the inauguration of the Amman Infiniti Centre in Jordan. The Amman Infiniti Centre, operated by Bustami & Saheb Company, will offer Jordanian customers the full range of Infiniti’s desirable ‘Inspired Performance’ models - from the class-leading Infiniti QX56 SUV, to the technologically-advanced Infiniti M full-size luxury sedan; the complete Infiniti G range of cabriolet, coupe and sedan to its ever-popular crossovers Infiniti FX and Infiniti EX.
Speaking at the event, Atsuo Kosaka, Managing Director, Nissan Middle East, said: “Launching Infiniti in Jordan represents another significant step forward for Infiniti’s global strategy. This year we announced a target of selling 500,000 Infiniti vehicles a year worldwide – more than three times what we sell today – by 2016. For a luxury car brand just 20 years old, we know this will be a big challenge. However, with a desirable model range, a strong team and outstanding partners we are confident in our ability to meet that challenge.”
Infiniti’s expansion into new countries is a crucial element of this plan, with the Middle East being a particularly important market. With the addition of the Amman Centre, there are now 29 Infiniti Centres across the region where visitors benefit from Infiniti’s unique hospitality.
“At the heart of our strategy is what we call the ‘Infiniti Total Ownership Experience’. It is at the core of what we do, ensuring quality service is an interwoven feature of our extraordinary vehicles. It is our collective objective to ensure that every aspect of ownership is a rewarding experience for our customers. Great efforts have already been made by Bustami & Saheb Trading Co. Ltd, to embed this philosophy into the Amman Infiniti Centre,” he said.
That philosophy is extended to the design of Infiniti Centres, which have their own unique ‘look and feel’ called the Infiniti Retail Environment Design Initiative – or IREDI. Customers appreciate it the moment they enter an Infiniti Centre and its benefits in the service they will receive in the years of ownership.
The event attracted over 400 guests with representatives from the Jordanian government in attendance.

2012 Infiniti FX
FX is one of the most popular Infinitis globally and a key performer in the Middle East, and the enhanced for 2012 model will be displayed for the first time in the Region at Dubai International Motor Show. With five-star equipment and safety, the 2012 FX has been given an aggressive new front grille and fascia – featuring a heavy influence from the stunning Infiniti Essence Concept – as well as a new 20-inch wheel design and an updated instrument cluster. Available with a choice of a 390-horsepower 5.0-liter 32-valve DOHC V8 engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) or with a 303-horsepower 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine, the FX continues to go from strength to strength.
G25
The Infiniti G25 Sedan, which also makes its show debut in the Middle East at Dubai International Motor Show, features a new 2.5-liter V6 and 7-speed automatic transmission, and shares the same dynamic exterior, interior and chassis as the G37, but with a smaller displacement engine and improved fuel economy. The 2.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 produces 218 horsepower and 25.8 kg-m of torque.
“With the new Infiniti G25 Sedan, we’re broadening the appeal of the G Line with a model designed to provide an additional choice for buyers looking for a true luxury sedan, but who might not need the higher levels of performance provided by our larger engine-equipped G37 models,” said Juergen Schmitz, General Manager, Infiniti Middle East. “The G25 is positioned in the heart of the luxury sport sedan market, allowing us to bring Infiniti’s Inspired Performance to a wider selection of buyers.”
FX Sebastian Vettel version
Created by automotive design icon Shiro Nakamura and the two-time Formula One champion, Sebastian Vettel, this ultra-exclusive concept model gives a strong indication of the final design of the production version, of which details will shortly be announced.

Infiniti, the luxury automotive performance brand from Japan, last night raised the curtain on the opening event of the ‘Infiniti Pitstop Challenge’ at Jumeirah Beach Residences (JBR) to crowds of eager fans. The opportunity to demonstrate their Grand Prix-style pitstop skills by changing, in the shortest possible time, the wheels and tyres of a replica Red Bull Racing RB7 car has clearly struck a chord with fans as they look forward to the 2011 Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix next month.
And, of course, the possibility of winning the most exclusive tickets in Formula One - Formula One Paddock Club™ tickets, which include the chance to walk along the pit lane and take a tour of Red Bull Racing’s highly-exclusive pit garage – is an added incentive.
“We’re delighted the Infiniti Pitstop Challenge has proved so popular and would encourage everyone to come along to this or any of the other three venues to pit their skills against the clock,” said Juergen Schmitz, General Manager for Infiniti Middle East.
To enter the Infiniti Pitstop Challenge, contestants can enroll online for priority privileges through the dedicated microsite (InfinitiPitstopChallenge.com), or sign-up on the day at any of the competition’s venues across Dubai and Abu Dhabi from October through to its conclusion in November at the Dubai International Motor Show.
The team of two people recording the quickest time will be chauffeur-driven in one of Infiniti’s inspired performance models to and from November’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, given a tour of the paddock on race day, and then seated in two of the most exclusive vantage points on the circuit to watch the race itself. There they have the chance to have photos taken of them in front of the team’s pit garage and cars.
The RB7 replica has been built specifically for use in the Infiniti Pitstop Challenge, according to the exacting demands and expectations of both Infiniti and Red Bull Racing. Every detail of the bodywork is precisely as it would be on the Grand Prix car, the only exceptions being the unique variances required on an actual car to meet the challenges of each particular circuit. The replica, however, has to withstand the rigours of having its wheels repeatedly changed by enthusiastic novices over the course of the 15 days of Infiniti Pitstop Challenge competition.
To do this, entrants to the Infiniti Pitstop Challenge will be equipped with a hand-held tool reminiscent of the air guns used in Grand Prix pit lanes to unbolt and reattach the wheels. While safety goggles and gloves are also available, no other specialist clothing is required – contestants simply receive a few minutes of instruction, participate, then stand back and compare their time against their rivals’ on the large display. All results are then fed into the central system and can be viewed throughout the competition period at (InfinitiPitstopChallenge.com)
While the overall competition winner will be declared on 12th November (to allow for arrangements to be made for the visit to the 2011 Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday 13th November), those who simply want to try their hand at this fun-filled activity will still have an opportunity to do so until Monday 14th November at the Dubai International Motor Show. While the main prize will already be spoken for, the team recording the best time on Saturday, Sunday or Monday at the Dubai Motor Show can expect more than just a pat on the back for their efforts.

The announcement was made by Jüergen Schmitz, recently-appointed General Manager for Infiniti Middle East.
To win the Infiniti Pitstop Challenge’s coveted prize, contestants will have to demonstrate their Grand Prix-style pitstop skills by changing, in the shortest possible time, the wheels and tyres of an exact replica of the Red Bull Racing RB7 car. Each team of two people can enroll online for priority privileges through the dedicated microsite (www.InfinitiPitstopChallenge.com), or sign-up on the day at any of the competition’s venues across Dubai and Abu Dhabi from October through to its conclusion in November at the Dubai International Motor Show.
The winning pair will be chauffeur-driven in one of Infiniti’s inspired performance models to and from November’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, given a tour of the paddock on race day, and then seated in two of the most exclusive vantage points on the circuit to watch the race itself. All participants will have the chance to have photos taken of them in front of the teams pit garage and cars.
“Infiniti’s success, both globally and in the GCC, is due in no small part to the technology, innovation and excitement instilled into all our models,” said Mr. Schmitz. “Our brand story is one of ambition, passion and challenging the automotive norms. I’m excited that the first campaign I have the honour to present to the region’s Infiniti owners, potential customers and fans encapsulates all of these elements, and offers the chance of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Making its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the Infiniti ETHEREA Concept re-imagines the compact luxury car for a discerning new generation of younger buyers, while providing a glimpse of a future European Infiniti line-up where the brand’s convention-defying distinctiveness reaches into the compact class for the first time.
“ETHEREA is about a new type of luxury,” said Toru Saito, Corporate Vice President and Leader of the Global Infiniti Business Unit.
“It is for younger buyers who do not want a smaller version of a typically conservative and traditional luxury car. It is for people who want a car that defines who they are, not who their parents were.”
Encapsulating everything that Infiniti stands for – including no-compromise hybrid power and maximum driving pleasure – in a car 4.4m long, ETHEREA proposes a bold new approach to the premium compact segment. Its dynamic character and highly sculptural, near mono-volume form provide a silhouette unlike anything currently in the class.
“ETHEREA is completely different from current luxury compact cars,” said Senior Vice President of Design, Shiro Nakamura. “That is appropriate for a new generation of drivers who think of themselves as different.
“As an exploration into what a future entry-level Infiniti may be like, ETHEREA is highly significant and a breakthrough in what Infiniti thinks about itself.”
Francois Bancon, General Manager of Exploratory and Advanced Product, said: “We think the market – and buyers of compact cars – is ready for a car like this, especially in Europe. As a vehicle to single out its owner as progressive, self confident and a little off the beaten path, ETHEREA fits very well with what Infiniti is all about.”
High performance
ETHEREA’s segment-busting appeal is based on the coming together of several vehicles styles. It is part elegant coupé, part spacious sedan, part practical hatchback and even part tall crossover. And being an Infiniti, there is also a large helping of sports car in the way it drives.
Like all Infinitis, ETHEREA puts driving pleasure high up alongside design. The concept car has been designed for a potent yet highly efficient hybrid drivetrain based around an in-house platform and the innovative one electric motor/twin clutch system used in the Infiniti M35h, the marque’s first hybrid currently going on sale around Europe.
A supercharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine developing 245 PS provides quick response and strong acceleration throughout the performance range. Boosting power when more is needed, and providing silent, emission-free driving at low speeds, is an electric motor. The transmission is a continuously variable (CVT) type and, in an Infiniti first, drive is to the front wheels.
Like the M35h, the hybrid powertrain is designed to use clean electric power more often, for longer periods and at higher speeds than hybrids generally manage, endowing ETHEREA with a hybrid’s advantages out on the open road as well as in busy city streets. This maximises efficiency and cuts CO2 emissions even further while imposing no compromises on the driving front.
Independent suspension, regenerative braking and advanced drive-by-wire electric/hydraulic steering further enhance the balance between performance and greenness.
Elegant profile
Designed in Japan under the direction of Shiro Nakamura, ETHEREA is more coupé than hatchback in inspiration, with many Infiniti flourishes first seen on the Essence concept supercar. However, ETHEREA’s elegant profile is not at the expense of practicality. Despite appearances, ETHEREA boasts a large lift-up tailgate.
Utlising an in-house platform developed for use by Infiniti, the long wheelbase and minimal overhangs guarantee characteristic Infiniti visual poise and sporting appeal. The bonnet may not be as long as that of rear-drive Infinitis, but the proportions are just as finely judged and the overall look just as balanced, with the unique crescent C-pillar offering a dynamic, and very distinctive, Infiniti signature.
The spacious four-seat cabin offers all the luxury that Infiniti owners expect plus unrivalled ease of access and egress, boosted by an H-point which is higher than that of the average compact luxury car. Four wide opening doors, rear-hinged at the back, and an absence of B-pillar offer an unprecedented feeling of openness.
Familiar Infiniti design language has evolved to meet the challenge of the concept car. The headlights, for example, define the Infiniti “face” more clearly than ever. With a subtly curving shape, the lamps incorporate daytime running lights formed out of a crescent of LEDs. Going forward, the new lights are destined to become a familiar Infiniti characteristic.
“Other elements of exterior design and interior craftsmanship are set to have an important influence on future production models,” said Shiro Nakamura.
ETHEREA IN DETAIL
Project leader and exterior designer, Giichi Endo, says ETHEREA can be summed up as a “four-door coupé with five-door practicality – a hatchback that doesn’t look like a hatchback.” Key was managing the new front-wheel drive architecture – all very different from the rear-drive FM platform that Infiniti designers are used to working with – to provide the traditional Infiniti “seductive lustre” to the design while delivering the interior roominess crucial for a car in the 4.4m class.
Wide opening doors, the rear doors hinged at the back, and no B pillar were central to the idea of being able to make the cabin as open and welcoming as possible. Access is further eased by the car’s height. ETHEREA is not a crossover but with a driver H (hip) point higher than in a regular compact car, it does hint at the easy access and natural driving position that distinguish an Infiniti such as the FX. The designers have dubbed the slightly elevated body style the “Lift-up”.
The front of ETHEREA offers an unmistakable impression of solidity. In a design that instantly links it to the rest of the Infiniti family, the high bonnet line is fronted by a deep grille. An updated version of Infiniti’s familiar double arch design, the grille’s translucent mesh finish with illumination is both entirely functional and highly artistic.
Shiro Nakamura says, in profile there is a suggestion of a mono-volume design –very different from current contenders in the compact luxury segment.
The design highlight for Nakamura, however, is the area around the base of the A pillar – as he says, one of the most complex areas for a designer to get right in any car. In ETHEREA, this area is executed in a style unlike that of any other car – apart from Essence, which again provides the inspiration. Key to making it work is the front fender whose exaggerated length extends to the A-pillar in a highly sculptural coming together of planes. A small quarter window in the A-pillar guarantees a clear view out. It all makes for a contemporary and innovative design that injects energy into the whole car.
Comfort and space
Just as the front-wheel drive platform presents new design opportunities for an Infiniti outside, so too does it allow a bold new approach in the cabin. With its flat floor and welcoming openness, ETHEREA’s interior is designed for comfort and space while offering the luxury and craftsmanship Infiniti buyers expect. As Francois Bancon says, “Your first premium luxury car experience should feel like this.”
The B-pillar-less design and opposing doors opens up the cabin and highlights its easy access and excellent roominess. With no transmission tunnel and a flat floor, the welcoming openness of ETHEREA’s cabin extends throughout the car, with only elegantly slender consoles between the four seats to act as armrests and house ancillary controls.
Like any Infiniti the driving position is sporting. The control layout is very driver centric, though not in a way that excludes passengers. Here is a concept where the luxury and sportiness can be shared by all. For example, the centre of the dashboard features twin screens, both as easily accessible to the front seat passenger as the driver. The lower, nearer display is a touch-screen for control of functions such as climate control and entertainment, while the screen further away is used purely to display information.
Craftsmanship
“Hamon” is the Japanese word for the dashboard dials. It refers to the ripples on a pond that radiate outward when a pebble is thrown into the water. In the same way, the dials radiate outward from the central tachometer. It is an elegant, as well as highly ergonomic, solution.
Harmonious design and materials are central to ETHEREA’s interior, just as they are to any Infiniti. Features making their debut on ETHEREA include Kumihimo, the kimono-inspired piping on the seats, and Inuyarai, the striking vertical strips on the inside of the doors. ETHEREA also debuts Infiniti’s newest trim, a version of the parchment paper-style finish known in Japanese as Washi. The new finish is called Kasane-Washi and introduces a new way of layering the paper, enhancing its texture. The craftsmanship in ETHEREA is inspired by Japanese culture and re-interpreted through leading-edge technologies.
Conclusion
As an exploration of a future entry-level Infiniti production model, ETHEREA breaks free of existing market segments, while showing that Infiniti, with the help of its Alliance partners, is serious about competing in both the compact luxury class and in Europe.
Francois Bancon said: “ETHEREA represents a redefinition, not a revolution – a car for buyers whose idea of luxury is very different from the stereotypes. ETHEREA is not a stereotype. It is a little bit borderline. It is an expression of identity and personality. It adds new values, as well as conveying existing ones.
“More than anything it is not just another luxury compact car.”
